| American Drum-set doyen Pheeroan akLaff believes that the arts are a way to give thanks and work for change. Pheeroan was first heard in the 1970s with Wadada Leo Smith, Oliver Lake, Anthony Davis, Henry Threadgill, James Newton, Cecil Taylor, and Sonny Sharrock. He toured Europe extensively with New York-based composers, resided in West Africa with the Guiraud ballet, and toured Asia with Yamashita Yosuke, Liu Sola, and Sunny Kim. He has conducted forums with Jorge Sepulveda in Colombia, Peter Tschulnigg in Austria, and participated in neural network research with Julian F. Thayer at McMasters University, Ontario, Canada, and with Psyche Loui at Wesleyan University, in Connecticut, USA. His drumming with adventurous composers includes tours of Africa, Asia, and Europe with other musical luminaries such as Anthony Braxton, Milford Graves, Amina Claudine Myers, Reggie Workman, Mike Nock, Tom Pierson, and many others. Based in New York, Pheeroan involves his audiences in hypnotic messaging and thoughtful banter. As an educator of The American Drum-set, his university students dig for a complete view of the meaning behind the music of New-world Africans in their shaping of the American social landscape. His lectures involve music listening sessions and rhythm studies that centralize empathy and discovery, key stabilizing qualities that ensemble music fosters in its participants. For this performance, Pheeroan will be playing two sets, one solo and one duo with Sydney's own saxophone master Peter Farrar, who is bringing Pheeroan to us in Sydney.
