Lent begins with Ash Wednesday this week

Lent begins with Ash Wednesday. On this day, Christians often have ashes imposed on their heads as a sign of our need for healing in the world, of our need to repent and believe in the Gospel and that without God we are but dust.

Come for Mass and the Imposition of ashes on Ash Wednesday

at 8:00am, 12:00pm, 5:30pm and 7:00pm

Because of the pandemic, the Imposition of Ashes will happen in a slightly different way than what we're used to. Instead of making the mark of the cross on the forehead of each person, the priest will instead sprinkle ashes on the heads of each.

During Lent:

  • The Stations of the Cross will be celebrated in the church each Friday at 6:30pm.
  • The Gospel Reflection group will meet every Thursday morning online at 9:00am.
  • The Novena of St. Joseph will be prayed each day between March 10th and 19th.
  • The Day of the Unborn will be observed on Thursday, March 25th.
  • A Day of Mercy will be celebrated on Saturday, March 27th.

May this Lenten Season be an opportunity for all to draw closer to Jesus, our Lord and Life.

Beginning Tuesday, Durham Region moves into the red level. We're still not able to host in-person gatherings or events in our parish hall, but the doors of our church will once again open for Sunday Mass. Generally, things return to how they were just before Christmas.

What to expect...

Households joining us will be seated two meters apart by our Hospitality Ministers.

Except for those with medical exemptions, those joining are required to wear a face covering.

Those attending Mass are required to provide details for contact tracing.

All are asked to maintain two meters distance from those from different households.

All are asked to reserve a spot for Mass ahead of time through our website.

The church will be sanitized after each Mass.

Small change to the opening prayer of Mass...

The end of the opening prayer at each Mass, called the collect, often ends with the words, "...one God forever and ever."

Beginning on Ash Wednesday however, the word 'one' will be omitted from this prayer in all English speaking countries. This change is made to avoid possible misunderstandings about the identity of the Son within the Blessed Trinity, or even the misconception that Our Lord Jesus Christ is “one God” among others. Many may not notice this change that brings the English translation of the Mass in closer unity with the Latin and other translations to European languages.

Share Love, Share Lent: (Re)discover Development and Peace

The Share Love, Share Lent campaign is inspired Pope Francis’s encyclical, Fratelli Tutti and its call “for a love that transcends… geography and distance” and “allows us to acknowledge, appreciate and love each person."

Each week, the campaign explores a different aspect of Development and Peace’s work and offers you ways to become involved. This week, meet one of our partners from the Global South and create your own fundraising web page!

Free Poinsettias

Our church looked beautiful for Christmas, thanks to the many who contributed to Christmas flowers and spent many hours decorating.

Christmas may be over and most of the decoration put away, but the poinsettias in our church are still there and in good health; they will have to be removed for Lent, however. So, between now and Ash Wednesday, feel free to take one home after Adoration or one of the daily Masses.
