A message from Exalted Ruler, Bill McGovern PER

Exalted Ruler

Hello all,

The summer is ending and hopefully we can get more attendance to the lodge with vacation time coming to an end. That being said, thank you to those that continue to support the lodge. The House and Trustees are in the final stages of developing a plan for reopening upstairs. We will need the support of everyone to allow expansion of hours.

We still need help on some of our programs. With limited members showing up, several of the programs are lacking the support needed to be successful. Still we have been able to offer some events and programs so far this year.

Thank you to Andrea and Michele for trying to get the bus trip off the ground. There were many people who had a scheduling conflict and hopefully a fall date with cooler weather will bring out the crowd to visit other lodges.

Thank you to Shannon and Wesley for running a successful picnic. It was nice to meet in a nice location with our families. Thank you to Jim and Paul, our chefs for the day, and to everyone who brought a dish to share.

Thank you to those coming to and providing our Friday Socials. The food has been great but the camaraderie was even better. We’ve been having around 20 people, and this is during the month of August. One I’m personally looking forward to is Michele & Keith’s Prime Rib dinner with a band. Let’s pack the house!

The House Committee is looking for movie nights once the sun goes down a little earlier. This will be another opportunity to get together as families.

The Grand Exalted Ruler will be coming to the state in September. I would like to send in a group RSVP for a table. Please let me or Andrea know if you wish to go.

Thanks again for the support and hope to see you around the lodge.

Fraternally yours,

Bill

Did you know that September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month?

22 A Day

National suicide rates have been on the rise in recent years, according to data from the National Institute of Mental Health. The suicide rate for veterans was 1.5 times that of non-veteran adults (PDF), after adjusting for age and sex, according to the most recent annual VA report on suicide prevention published last year, which details data from 2018.

And while the VA hasn’t yet published comprehensive data from 2020 or 2021, individual reports from Veterans Health Administration sites show an increase of on-campus suicides from January of 2020 to September of 2020, according to the VA Office of Mental Health and Suicide Prevention monitoring of VHA site reports and administrative data.

The increase in rates of suicide for veterans and active-duty personnel outpace that of the general population, according to both the VA and a study by the Costs of War Project published in June.
